I have noticed the same absence of individual voice in every person who brags about being a writer without being a reader. People who don't read cannot realize how full of other people's words, ideas and images we are and how much work it takes to be able to write something else than a compilation of common places.

When I say "read", I don't mean just swallowing some textual content. I mean read actively a large variety of carefuly chosen works that allow us to get a comprehensive view of the field, the topic, the question, the era or the genre we want to write about.

Oh, and it takes time and patience. True knowledge and style is not something you can acquire in a lyophilized form, just and water and voilà !
